Devils Postpile

When I found out that Devils Postpile would close starting in November, I knew right away the Eastern Sierra trip must realise. Located beyond the skiing area of the Mammoth Lakes, the ride to the Devils Postpile was a pleasant one in a comfortably warm afternoon. The end of autumn also meant uncrowded traveling in the Mammoth Lakes, a popular skiing area in the winter.

The Devils Postpile is only 0.4 mile from the trailhead while the Rainbow Falls (which I was told not spectacular this time of the year) is 2.5 miles away. Although I was fatigued, the beauty of mother nature was the perfect cure. Everywhere I looked along the trail, there was wonderful scenery -- tall trees, mountains covered in mild snow, a creek, warm sunlight -- the perfect combination that eased my mind. At last, I arrived at the base of the Devils Postpile, a cliff of columnar basalt created by a lava flow some time less than 100,000 years ago. However, the most amazing part is that these columns seem magically symmetrical. It was just one of those things that remind you how amazing mother nature can be. As far as photos went, I could not get a single angle that I particularly liked because the only spots to shoot the structure was the base (or more likely was the fact that I'm not a skilled photographer). So here it is, the Devils Postpile!
