Carlsbad Caverns

Earlier this month I spent a week visiting various national parks in New Mexico. Our first major attraction was Carlsbad Caverns National Park, the fifth largest chamber in North America.
With only one day to explore the park, we opted to do the self-guided tour in the morning and a short and easy ranger-led tour in the afternoon. Visitors may choose to ride the elevator directly to the Big Room, but we didn't want to turn this into a sightseeing trip. Hence, we hiked 1.25 mile to the Big Room (approximately 750 feet underground) via the Natural Entrance. The 1-mile Big Room route is another self-guided walk around the perimeter of the largest room in the cave. Because it is underground, the room is partially and dimly lit throughout. The photograph above was taken near the entrance, but the Big Room goes much further than shown. "Seeing is believing", that is an accurate idiom to describe the awesomeness of Carlsbad Caverns.
