Bear Gulch Cave
Having enjoyed some nice views along the Airline Highway for 90 minutes, we have finally arrived at Pinnacles National Park. It is a huge park with east and west entrances but they are not connected. This park offers many spots for the rock climbing lovers; as for the casual visitors, the Bear Gulch Cave and Balconies Cave are two most popular attractions.
The Bear Gulch Cave is in fact the home to a colony of Townsend's big-eared bats where they rest in winter and raise the young in late spring and summer. In order to protect and preserve these sensitive species, the cave is only open when the bats are not occupying the cave and when weather permits (storm can cause flooding). Anyway, the cave was fully open on our visit so we could venture through the entire place. With low ceiling, minimal sunlight, and several pools of water, it certainly felt like a treasure hunt. It was quite an experience and I highly recommend this hidden spot!
